“I’m so confused!” A phrase often heard from anybody new to cake decorating who is just setting out on their sugarcraft journey! They are referring of course to the vast range of sugar-based pastes available to buy today, and their different uses. Which paste should I use for flower making, making models or constructing a church, for instance? These are questions often asked!

Pest and vermin control in Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester has seen a brisk in 2010 which is somewhat unexpected given the very cold winter of 2009/10.

Pest and Vermin controllers were kept busy with the usual city centre rodent infestations throughout the winter of 2009/10, but the relatively cold early part of the year has already seen some ant infestations coming in.

The wet summers of 2008 and 2009 were not to the taste of the hymenoptera (sawflies, wasps, ants & bees) but 2010 looks like it will be a busy year for ant calls.

Usually ants make nests under the floors of houses and inside cavity walls causing a large number of foraging ants to enter kitchens and food cupboards.

However it is at the annual mating time when they can be most distressing as they create winged males and queens which then mate on the wing.

The appearance of many thousands of these winged ants inside houses can be horrific indeed.

A somewhat new pest was very troublesome in the Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester area last season, the Varied Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci).

It was not common for pest controllers in the North West to encounter these pests until recent times but they seemed to appear from nowhere in 2008 and already this March has seen reports of these beetles in substantial numbers.

Having a similar life cycle to moths their larvae, known as woolly bears can eat natural fibres and can do substantial damage to carpets and all fabrics. They are a difficult and tricky pest to eradicate.

Bed Bugs are continuing their come back in the Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire area, frequently arriving as hitch-hikers in the suitcases of home-coming holiday makers.

Regularly the first reaction of unfortunates who realise that they are infested with these horrific,blood-sucking insects is to get rid of the old beds and buy new.

This is an expensive mistake as despite their name bed bugs don’t just live in beds and in an infested bedroom will be found everywhere within up to fifteen feet of the bed, in cupboards, drawers etc, even in electrical sockets and the new beds become rapidly re-infested.

A lot of people confuse bed bugs with dust mites which are not visible to the naked eye.

They dine exclusively on blood which they syphon from their sleeping victims. People regularly associate bed bugs with insanitary conditions but nothing could be less true, they do not need squalor, they dine on you!

Up to April 30th 2010 Harrier & Manchester Pest Control are offering a 25% reduction on their guaranteed ant treatment.

This revolutionary new treatment which is guaranteed for three years, extendable indefinitely in further three year chunks by a affordable re-treatment every three years, can be carried out in most houses subject to satisfactory, free

For the summer of 2010 Harrier Pest Control are offering a fixed price for destroying wasps nests in the Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire area of just thirty two pounds.

My grandmother was a very feisty woman. At 92 she was just as full of life as the youngest in the family and there was nothing we did that she couldn’t and didn’t do. And that’s exactly what she was doing last winter when she was ice-skating around the pond trying to catch Bethan (who at 11 is rather fast) when she slipped and broke her leg, dropping with a thud to the ice and briefly losing consciousness. Now, my grandmother had never been sick for a single day in her life, not as much as a runny nose or a bad tummy, not even once. She was regarded as something of an oddity by the local medical fraternity who was always ‘offering” to run a battery of tests of on her in the interests of medical science they said. Gran told them to bugger off because she didn’t need them t run a whole load of tests to find out what was right with her! She always said her secret was simple, just keep moving and never stop. And that’s how she broke her leg, the first time anyone of us had ever seen her come to a complete stop. Of course she wasn’t at all happy about being carried off the ice and made sure that we all knew exactly how she felt. She demanded we put her down so that she could keep moving but eventually she let us get her into the car.

We managed to get her to hospital where the young doctor made the fatal mistake of addressing her as “my Dear” which, I’m ashamed to say earned him a kick in his groin from my grandmothers’ s left foot – which sadly for him, was still encased in its freshly sharpened ice-skate.  My grandmother detested being patronized above all else. The woman had doctorate in nuclear physics and had raised seven children (from four different fathers) entirely on her own, she really didn’t appreciate being spoken to like a simpleton because her hair was white.  Suitably chastised he addressed her marm for the rest of the consult, but the poor lad couldn’t really get back in her good books after he told her that she’d have to stop moving around quite so much if she wanted her leg to heal. Nobody told Gran to stop moving.

Once her leg was plastered up properly and the doctor had checked her out thoroughly we took her home and I settled her in for the night. She even let me make her a drop of tea (with a little tot of whiskey for the shock) and sit with her in bed while she drank it. For once my Gran looked ever so frail and it was remarkably strange to see her not moving at all for once.  She told me to give her a hug and sloppy kiss and to get moving on home for the night.
Gran didn’t wake up the next morning. I guess when she realized that she wouldn’t be a able to keep moving anymore she diced it was time to be moving on.

In addition to the well known information that most of us are familiar with, there are some fun fitness facts that don’t get as much attention. As you become more knowledgeable about what it takes to improve your health, you have more choices when it comes to choosing your foods, workout routines and other daily activities. Exercising and physical fitness are much like all else in that you can achieve success in different ways.

One of the most important benefits of fitness is that it helps you reduce symptoms such as stress, anxiety and depression, and regular exercise is a way to keep our minds occupied on something other than our daily responsibilities. One thing that has long been known is your brain produces more of a certain kind of chemical that really does help you to feel better. When you produce these brain chemicals, then that feeling of well being is much like the runner’s high that we all know about. Even if you are depressed but still able to get out and do something, then at the very least it will not hurt you. Everybody wants to look their best, and that includes terrific looking skin – and that is something else you can have as a benefit from being in good shape. In addition to keep your skin hydrated, it makes a difference to eat properly and get adequate sleep. Your blood needs to carry away all the toxins that build up in the body, and that is why a stronger circulatory system is vital. You know when you work hard, you sweat – and that is one more cleansing effect on your body. Your body will also delay the onset of the aging process for much longer when you keep exercising in your life. Make sure to integrate certain HIIT workouts in your fitness regime.

Just because it is winter is no excuse to shut down, and in fact it will give you greater variety. It is only the smart thing to do when you remain fit all throughout the year. As long as you do your stretching and warm-ups, then your entire body will stay strong. Besides, if you exercise outside when it is cold, then that will really invigorate you. Looking forward to doing new things during winter will prevent exercise burn-out. Your psychological outlook and attitudes play an important role in this, too, so remember that. You have to get a solid grounding in the principles we are talking about, and that gives you more ability. Learn to be forward moving, so you are now more familiar with some fitness facts.

Herbal Supplements are not a new concept and have been used for thousands of years in treating diseases. Some people are strong opponents of medicines and the modern health care system and prefer getting holistic treatment options that have little or no side effects on the body.

Because there are thousands of products being manufactured each day, it can be difficult to know which one to choose in order to receive all the natural elements that a tablet has to offer. Doing research is important as it can provide information that is not known to the general public. A physician may be able to suggest the ideal product to buy.

Lead and other chemicals can be harmful to one’s brain and nervous function and should never be used in creating of a supplement. The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for checking all products for human consumption in the US.It can have it taken out of the market if it does not comply with the stated regulations.

It is the work of the FDA to check all the products that are going into the marketplace to ensure that humans can consume them without any troubling side effects. It however is not able to go after scammers who cheat innocent people that their products are safe to consume. So it is the responsibility of the consumer to also look out for products which may not be appropriate for consumption.

If one is looking to know whether a product is a real supplement, then they can always go to the Internet and look at the reviews that others who have used the item have to say.The product usually has a stamp from the government agency that is responsible for ensuring authenticity of goods and recommended servings should be clearly written on the good.

If one wants to buy a product but is not sure about the information displayed on it, they can call the toll free number on the container and ask questions. There are organizations on the Internet that can help consumers make smart choices. One’s doctor is also a reliable source of information on which products contain natural elements that the patient can buy.

Pregnant women are always at risk of harming their child if they take in Herbal Supplements without asking their doctor whether its safe to do so. It is also not advisable for geriatrics to use these products because they are usually using prescription medicine which may have a bad effect on their organs and tissues in the body.
