It is not uncommon for family members to be stunned when a loved one dies and the death certificate lists that they died of sepsis. What most people do not know sepsis is not at all rare especially in those who are older. It is actually one of the most frequent causes of deaths in hospitals. Thousands and thousands of individuals die because of sepsis in the US every year.

Sepsis is really a reaction to a serious infection. Common sources of infections include open wounds and bed sores. Sources of infections like these are rather common in elderly men and women in hospitals/nursing homes/rehabilitation facilities.

The key to the survival of sepsis is early treatment. When the infection stays untreated it sepsis can progress as it gets worse the odds of survival drop. Once the patient experiences septic shock the chance of survival plummets to roughly 50%.

A different type of person who have a higher risk of getting infections are cancer patients, for example, patients with breast cancer. A common treatment for many cancers includes chemotherapy which can significantly damage the individual’s immune system. For someone in this condition, infections can be a serious issue and can become septic. Moreover, chemotherapy is in many cases administered via a port that can itself become infected. This same problem comes up with patients in the process of dialysis.

It is essential for people to be cognizant of the risks posed by infections and to speak with their doctor in the event they notice evidence of an infection or have any worries.

The information discussed here is intended only for basic educational uses only. It is not intended as, and it should not be taken to be, medical or legal advice. If you have any health or medical questions speak to a doctor without delay. And if you suspect you may be the victim of medical malpractice contact a lawyer. An attorney can figure out if you have a valid claim. Consult the lawyer right away as the law limits the time you have to pursue a lawsuit.
